Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.’ But Elisha said, ‘As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.’ So they went down to Bethel. 2 Kings: 2:2
Our reading from the Hebrew Bible this week is about the Prophet Elijah being taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire. God told Elijah to anoint Elisha as the successor prophet to Elijah. Elijah tells Elisha not to follow him, but Elisha insists on staying with Elijah.
Elisha's insistence on accompanying Elijah no matter what comes next, reminded me of how so many of us accompany our loved ones as they transition from this earthly place. Having worked as a social worker in hospice, I was blessed to accompany many people and families during this time.
Accompanying people as they are dying is not easy for us to do and yet, it is so comforting to the person and also to us, I think. When my father was dying, I spent the week playing his favorite music and talking with his friends who came to visit. I decorated his room with yellow roses, a favorite flower for him, and held his hand. I had conversations with him. My father was not able to have conversations at that point and yet I felt in close communion to him.
While the death of our loved ones is tough, I hope you are also blessed by staying by their side during that important time.
Many blessings!
Love, Rebecca+
