125th Anniversary Celebration
Thursday evening, November 1, 2012, The Church of the Nativity celebrated the 125th anniversary of the building of the church on South 2nd Street in Newport. The congregation, founded by Elizabeth and Henry Bechtel, laid the cornerstone on June 8, 1887.
Devastated by the floodwaters of Hurricane Agnes in 1972, the interior was restored to its current beauty by 1988 under the leadership of The Rev. Cannon. William Warne, who served as the guest preacher for the anniversary service.
The congregation of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania has engaged in mission and ministry especially through the establishment of many housing facilities in the area; Honaman House in Thompsontown, Episcopal Commons in Newport, The Warren House transitional apartments for homeless citizen in New Bloomfield, The Eagle House for homeless veterans and Linda House, the YWCA’s transitional facility for survivors of domestic violence.
The church is currently served by The Rev. Daphne Messersmith, rector, and wardens Todd Saner and Bob Baker.
