A note from the Rector…
Friends,
Happy New Year! Yes, on November 29, the first Sunday in Advent, we celebrate the church’s new year. We’ll be in Year C of the lectionary cycle. There are three years to the cycle – A, B, and C. During year C, we read much of the Gospel of Luke. The writer of Luke also is believed to be the writer of Acts, so it’s great to read these two books of the Bible together.
While much of the world is encouraging us to rush around and get ready for the holidays, our church focus on Advent is encouraging us to be contemplative… to slow down. Advent is a time of preparing ourselves for the coming of Christ. We know preparation takes time. Just think of all of the preparation needed for our Thanksgiving celebration.
In order to prepare, we go through a number of steps. First we need to be aware and to acknowledge that there is an event or change that is coming in the future.
We then need to take stock of what the event will require of us. Do we have the skills we need? Do we have the tools we need?
Once we take stock, we need to gather what it is we think we’ll need.
