I pray you are having a blessed Holy Week.
On Thursday at our 7pm service, we remember Christ's last meal with his disciples and followers. We remember how he served them by washing their tired and dirty feet. We remember the commandment that he left us to love one another. Then, we strip the altar and sanctuary bare and cover the croses in black as we remember the tragedy and violence that occurred after the meal; the betrayal of Jesus by one of his disciples.
On Friday at noon, we walk through the square of Newport and remember Jesus' death, using the hymn The Old Rugged Cross. Friday night at 7pm, we join the members of Incarnation United Church of Christ for a Good Friday service.
This Sunday we celebrate Easter, a celebration of new life. It is a joyous time, because regardless of our foibles and mistakes, we are always forgiven. After the difficult week of betrayal, denial and execution of Jesus, we are reminded that we can always start anew.
Our prayer for Easter is that the lures that move us away from God, the emotions and actions of Holy Week that resulted in the death of Jesus, lose their power over us. In essence, we pray that we grow ever closer to God and the times of moving away become less.

We welcome the Rev. Canon Robert Schiesler as sabbatical pastor during Rev. Rebecca’s absence from April 18 – Aug. 1.
Canon Bob holds graduate degrees in theology and ministry including the Ph.D. His ministry included serving as Dean of the cathedral in Iowa and as Rector of the pro-cathedral church in Michigan. Moving to Mechanicsburg in 2015, he became Rector of St. Luke’s Church where he served until 2019. In 2006, he was made a Canon of Honor in the Episcopal Church and in 2017, Queen Elizabeth II named him an officer of the Order of St. John.
