MAY 2013
From the Rector...
In order to wake my brain up, I am trying something new. It is a canned drink that I just discovered when we went to my son’s house after Pablo’s baptism a couple of weeks ago. This SanPellegrino is not too sweet, has a nice citrus fruit flavor and some good fizziness to it. When I saw it on sale at the Linglestown Rd Giant, I picked up 10 cans!.
Depending on my mood, I enjoy the grapefruit, lemon and orange flavors and am astonished at how such a new taste lights up my life – I guess at this age, it doesn’t take much!
For some people, newness is not all that exciting. They would just as soon keep things steady and established. I do understand that. There is so much chaos in the world, change seems so disorienting and challenging. But, for me, it is stimulating and life-giving.
Church is one of the places where many people count on steadiness. Their spiritual life provides a constancy that is a “still point in a turning world”. They have encountered God there and need to be able to encounter God again and again in a familiar setting with familiar music, liturgy and familiar people.
But there are others who thrive on differences, a new hymn every week, eucharistic prayers from around the world, images of God and ways to connect with Jesus that are unusual and unfamiliar. When Peter experienced the vision of the sheet with all the animals (Acts 11:1-18), the message is clear. God’s invitation to the faith in Jesus is open to all...even/especially to the formerly rejected. This seems to say to Peter (and to us) don’t be afraid of the new, the unfamiliar, the different, the previously outrageous! Entertain the possibility that your life will be enriched by a new experience, a new attitude, a new understanding of God’s love for all creation, a new understanding of God’s love for you!
New and different, change and challenge...it wakes up the brain and opens the heart. Love enters, trust encourages and we all grow!
Peace,
Daphne

THE PERRY COUNTY FOOD BANK
The Perry County Food Bank is in need of the following items that many times are on sale at the store: canned tuna and chicken, paper products and personal care items, canned fruits and vegetables, pastas, soups and cereals. They can also use store bags – paper, plastic or cloth – these don’t cost anything. Your donations and continued support are also appreciated so very much.
DIABETES SUPPORT
There is a diabetes support group here in Perry County. It meets each month at St. Paul's in Newport. The group is facilitated by Theresa Gustafson, who works as a diabetes educator at Hershey Medical Center. Theresa lives in Newport. The program is free of charge and open to persons with diabetes, persons who have been told they are at risk for diabetes (or that they have pre-diabetes), and persons who help to care for someone with diabetes. Topics of discussion have ranged from medications to meal planning; members of the group help to choose the topics that will be discussed. The schedule for the next 3 months is: Monday, May 20, Monday, June 24, and Monday, July 22. The meetings are 7:00-8:00 p.m.
AL ANON GROUP TO FORM
An Al Anon group will be forming in Newport on Wednesday, March 12, 2013 at 6 PM. The group will meet at Hope Eternal United Methodist Church located on the hill across Rt. 34 from the Giant supermarket (2 Burd Road, Newport, PA 17074). Meetings
will be held the second Wednesday each month. Al Anon is a group that supports persons for which alcohol has been a problem with a family member or with a friend.
