This Sunday

Observance of Earth Day/Arbor Day

Michele Neibert, Parish Administrator April 22, 2020
This Sunday (April 26, 2020) at The Church of the Nativity and St. Stephen

O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Collect for Third Sunday of EasterBCP 224-225

This Sunday our Gospel is one of my favorite stories about Jesus' appearance after his resurrection. It's the one about the people walking to Emmaus and meeting Jesus on the road, only they don't recognize him. They have a wonderful conversation with him, where he teaches them about the scriptures. They beg him to stay with them a little longer and share a meal. He obliges and when he breaks the bread, they suddenly realize it is Jesus who has been with them all along.

We hear this story every year and yet this year it takes on new meaning because we cannot meet in person to share the Eucharistic meal. We long to sit down at table with each other. We long to share our fun coffee hour. It's not possible now and might not be possible for quite some tiime.

So we adapt. We hear the familiar story and have good memories. We also know that Jesus is with us regardless. We know that we continue to be Christ's body regardless of whether we can meet in person or not.

Many before us have faced similar circumstances of not being able to meet or share the Eucharist. The Armed Forces prayerbook provides options when members of the military cannot get to a service. For some reason, we have over 10 of these pocket-sized prayerbooks in our conference room. They are from 1988. Here is the prayer they recommend when you cannot receive:

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. And since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you , and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

Many blessings and continued prayers for your wellbeing.

Love, Rebecca+
