Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. Collect for Proper 17, Book of Common Prayer, p. 233
Sometimes I say to myself, "I wonder what Jesus Christ that person is following?" At times when people espouse that they are Christians and especially when some loudly proclaim to follow Jesus Christ, I find their actions just don't accord with the Jesus Christ I read about in the Bible and have experienced in my life.
I've always remembered reading a story about Jim Bakker, the founder of the PTL (Praise The Lord) Club. As some of you may remember, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker had an amazing and wildly successful talk/religion show on TV. The show was eventually broadcast from a huge complex in Ft. Mill, South Carolina, just over the border with North Carolina and near Charlotte. I actually visited the studio when I lived in Charlotte.
Well, the whole enterprise collapsed when Jim Bakker was accused of fraud and rape. He ended up in prison. In the article I read, he talked about how after the collapse of his ministry, he finally read the Bible...finally read the Gospels and learned about Jesus Christ.
In our prayer this Sunday, we ask for an increase in true religion. May we continue to grow in the ways we follow Jesus Christ.
Love, Rebecca+
