This Sunday the Bishop visits and we observe African-American history month. It is also the remembrance of Absalom Jones, who founded the first Black Episcopal parish in the United States in 1794, in Philadelphia. St. Thomas African Episcopal Church still meets.
In 1802 Jones are ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church, the first African-American priest in our denomination. He is known for his Thanksgiving Sermon preached on January 1, 1808, the day the international slave trade was abolished in the United States. Some of you heard Anthony Alexander portray Jones and deliver this sermon to us at St. Stephen's a few years ago. Jones faced much discrimination and so did his parish as they tried to establish themselves as a parish in The Episcopal Church. Yet, despite their struggles, they remained in The Episcopal Church, establishing an amazing legacy of mission and worship.
Blessed Absalom definitely put his trust in God and could not be moved.
