This Sunday

Candlemas Procession. Parlor People discussion of Gospel of John continues

Michele Neibert, Parish Administrator January 30, 2020
This Sunday (February 2, 2020) at Church of the Nativity and St. Stephen

Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray that, as your only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple, so we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts by Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Collect for The Presentation, p. 239, Book of Common Prayer

This Sunday we observe the presentation of Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. Thirty-three days after his circumcision, Mary and Joseph traveled the long distance to Jerusalem as part of the rite of induction into Judaism. Mary and Joseph offered two doves as sacrifice.

Our Collect reminds us to be presented to God with pure and clean hearts. We remember as we enter the sacred space of worship to examine ourselves. Have our intentions and actions during the week been in alignment with the teachings of Christ? Have we asked forgiveness for our sins, those things that move us away from God?

Let us come together each week with pure and clean hearts to worship God and to be strengthened for the week ahead.

Many blessings as you finish your week!

Love, Rebecca+

This Sunday of the Presentation of Jesus is also known as Candlemas. After announcements, we gather in the hallway between the church and parish house for prayers and a candlelight procession into the church. In some traditions, Candlemas marks the end of the Christmas season and a time when all Christmas decorations are put away. Another tradition is for people to bring their candles to church to be blessed, so as they burn throughout the year, they remind people of Jesus, the light of the world.
