Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Collect for the Third Sunday in Lent, p. 218, The Book of Common Prayer
I think many of us would argue with the first line of this prayer. "What do you mean I have no power to help myself, " we'd vehemently state. Of course I can help myself. We think of ourselves as self-reliant or even totally independent of others.
Yes, a certain amount of self-reliance is necessary; however, keeping that instinct in balance is the challenge. In 12-step work, the first step is admitting powerlessness over the addictive substance and subsequent steps state reliance upon a power greater than oneself.
The truth is we all need assistance and support outside ourselves. Sometimes God blesses us with family, friends and a church community that provide that support, assistance and even guidance. In addition, a reliance upon God is necessary.
We do not need to do anything totally alone. We need to remind ourselves of that fact. God has given us a community of people and the Holy Spirit to guide us in this life.
Blessings as you finish your week!
Love, Rebecca+
