O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Collect for the Second Sunday in Lent, p. 218, Book of Common Prayer
We have gone astray. That reminds me of the beautiful chorus from Handel's Messiah, We Like Sheep, based upon Isaiah Chapter 53, verse 6. The Message Bible says it this way:
We're all like sheep who've wandered off and gotten lost. We've all done our own thing, gone our own way.
During Lent is a great time to ponder how we have wandered away from God and how we have gotten lost. It is a good time to ponder how we have done our own thing and gone our own way. Most of us are very blessed to have the resources to make many choices about our lives. Many of us are able and used to being in control and in charge. Living in this time of pandemic has reminded us that there are limits to this control and limits to the choices we can make.
We can become obsessed with controlling every aspect of our lives and that control takes us away from partnership with God. We can go astray. May we during this Lenten time, find where we have gone astray and with penitent hearts and steadfast faith, return to God.
Love, Rebecca+
Prayer for Spiritual Communion
The prayer for spiritual communion was inadvertantly left out of the booklets for Lent. Here it is:
My Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. I love you above all things, and long for you in my soul. Since I cannot receive you in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.
