This Sunday (July 12, 2020) at The Church of the Nativity and St. Stephen

O Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of your people who call upon you, and grant that they may know and understand what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Collect for Proper 10, Book of Common Prayer, p. 231

Recently some friends have been talking about "performative nonsense." It's a way to describe merely looking like you've changed or addressed an issue by performing some outward sign, but inwardly, things haven't changed.

A friend wondered if our church services are "performative nonsense." Does our coming together to worship God lead to substantial, deep change? For instance, a recent discussion with clergy centered around stewardship. One of the clergy talked about something he learned years ago...about raising money and/or tithing income for providing services or support for people who are poor. Yes, we do that at Nativity and bless so many wonderful organizations in our communty. That is important AND I believe we must also do work to eradicate poverty in the first place. Does our worship lead to action, to change in line with the vision we see God, through Jesus Christ, gave us?

Our Collect this Sunday asks that we may know and understand the things we ought to do and then have the power to do them. Otherwise, are we just involved in performative nonsense?
