This Sunday

School supplies and baby supplies needed

Michele Neibert, Parish Administrator July 11, 2019
This Sunday (July 14, 2019) at The Church of the Nativity and St. Stephen
See, I am setting a plumb-line in the midst of my people Israel Amos 7:8

And the Lord said to me, ‘Amos, what do you see?’ And I said, ‘A plumb-line.’ Then the Lord said,
‘See, I am setting a plumb-line
   in the midst of my people Israel;
   I will never again pass them by;
the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate,
   and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste,
   and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.’  Amos 7:8-9

My father loved to build dry stone walls. The home we lived in for nearly 30 years, needed a stone retaining wall. I have fond memories of my father getting a delivery of limestone and building that wall. He carefully chose every stone to sit one atop of another. And he had a plumb line tool that helped him keep everything level.

That tool amazed me. It was diamond shaped, with a string that pulled out from it. The string was covered in a chalky substance. You'd set the two ends in place and then flick the string to create a straight line on the wall or stone that you could then follow with whatever material with which you were working.

This Sunday we hear about the prophet Amos' vision where God is setting the plumb line. The people of Israel have not been following God. They have strayed from the plumb line. God asks Amos to prophesy the impending destruction that will occur because the people have strayed. Amos isn't thrilled about this request, needless to say. Yet, God has chosen him.

How are you doing keeping to God's plumb line and/or are you being called to prophesy like Amos?

Many blessings as you finish your week.

Love, Rebecca+
