This Sunday (June 12, 2016) at The Church of the Nativity and St. Stephen

This Sunday

The Rev. Rebecca Myers June 10, 2016

Keep, O Lord, your household the Church in your steadfast faith and love, that through your grace we may proclaim your truth with boldness, and minister your justice with compassion; for the sake of our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Collect for Proper 6, Book of Common Prayer, p. 230

Yes, we are the household of God and specifically the household of The Church of the Nativity and St. Stephen. A household, according to Merriam-Webster is "those who live under the same roof and compose a family."

We individually live in many different places, in many different types of homes, and in many different ways. Yet, we are one household of God. For many of us, getting together with our families is a special joy. When family members are away or absent, we feel the loss. We miss them and long to see them. We notice the empty place at the table.

So it is with our church household. We hope to see each other this one time each week. We notice who's missing and who's not at the table. It's good when we know our family members are away and that's why they're not with us.

Not only is being with our family a special joy, but also, in order to proclaim God's truth with boldness and to minister God's justice with compassion, we need each other. We need our family to do God's work.

Blessings as you finish your week!

Love, Rebecca+

Urge your Senator to Support the Genocide and Atrocity Prevention Act

The Episcopal Church strongly believes that countries have moral responsibility to protect their citizens from mass atrocities, including ethnic cleansing, war crimes, and genocide. To that end, the Senate has recently introduced the Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act, a legislation that will ensure our government has the tools and resources needed to promote peace and protect civilians. Ask your senator to support this bill today.

//advocacy.episcopalchurch.org/episcopal/app/write-a-letter?0&engagementId=217733

Sample letter:

As an Episcopalian and your constituent, it is my belief that the U.S. government has a moral responsibility to protect civilians from mass atrocities, including ethnic cleansing, war crimes, and genocide.

Therefore, I urge you to support the Genocide and Atrocity Prevention Act [S. 2551].

This legislation provides the coordination, flexibility, and training we need to prevent mass violence. It permanently authorizes the Atrocities Prevention Board, a high-level interagency body instituted in 2012 to ensure that genocide and mass atrocity prevention are a priority at the highest levels of the U.S. government, and to coordinate response to emerging crises.

Atrocities prevention is a bipartisan issue. Both Democratic and Republican leaders, such as President Reagan, supported the U.S. ratification of the Genocide Convention. Furthermore, the Atrocities Prevention Board was established through a bipartisan Senate resolution.

By addressing conflicts before they erupt into widespread violence, this legislation could help save lives—and save money in the long run. Please co-sponsor the Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act.
