The Lord loves those who hate evil; *
he preserves the lives of his saints
and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Psalm 97:10
I am still processing my experience from last week, where I visited civil rights museums and sites in Birmingham, Montgomery and Selma, Alabama. The trip was organized by the Union of Black Episcopalians, Washington, DC Chapter and was titled, Ambassadors of Healing. There were 52 of us from many parts of the United States. One family owns a video production company and fully documented our pilgrimage.
We visited the new Legacy Museum, set up by the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). This museum makes the links between domestic slavery (what occurred after the international slave trade was abolished in 1810), lynching, and the current mass incarceration of people, especially those who are Black and Brown.
We then visited the Memorial for Peace and Justice, which documents 4,400 lynchings in the United States from 1870 through 1950. The names of those lynched, if known, and the dates are recorded on rusted iron rectangles and arranged by state and then county. It is at both haunting, horrifying and serene. There are duplicates of each iron piece, and it is hoped that each county will set up their own memorial and claim the duplicate piece.
EJI believes we can only heal from this horrifying period in our nation, with its ongoing legacy of mass incarceration, if we know our history. We can only choose another path once we admit the path we are on and where that path started.
Our Psalmist reminds us that God loves those who hate evil. May we be among the number who work for justice, love and peace. The Equal Justice Initiative is one organization that shows us the way.
Blessings as you finish your week.
Love, Rebecca+
