You have been my helper;
cast me not away; *
do not forsake me, O God of my salvation. Psalm 27:13
Our Psalm this Sunday is probably very familiar to most of you. In my reading this week, Verse 13 caught my attention.
In our culture, we are encouraged to be self-sufficient. We are encouraged to be self-reliant and to depend upon ourselves. Now self-sufficiency and self-reliance certainly have their place. It can be good to be confident. It's important to do the work we are capable of doing to support ourselves and to care for others.
Yet, sometimes we go too far. We begin to think we do not need anyone else. We forget about the people who formed us and supported us and continue to form us and support us. We forget we didn't not do this alone. We forget that we truly need God. In some circles you hear the saying that we all need God and to remember that we are NOT God.
So living into this verse 13 of Psalm 27 is important. We are reminded that God is our helper. We are reminded not only to ask that God not cast us away nor forsake us, but that we also do not cast God away nor forsake our relationship with God.
Amen.
