I was very busy with the firefighters this past weekend. On Saturday was a fundraiser and I helped serve the meal. I could see that what I was doing was easy, compared to cooking the food, some of which was barbecued earlier that day; or setting up the tables and running the event. Then there was clean-up.
On Sunday, I saw plenty of cars in the parking lot. Maybe they were cleaning up or maybe there was a training.
Then on Monday was the regular twice-monthly meeting. The meetings are fairly short. I left that meeting to go pick up my cousin in Harrisburg. On the way home, about 9:30pm, I saw that the east-bound lanes of the highway were closed.
Yes, there was an awful accident and there were the firefighters on the scene. The fire police were directing traffic and even closing the highway. Life lion was needed to carry a person to the hospital, so that needed to be coordinated. They needed to help the people involved in the accident, too. So many people affected by this tragic event.
Yet, out of the depths, these firefighters were there. They were doing their best to care for those involved. Even with the tiring weekend of events and meetings and trainings, they sprung into action.
That's how God is. When we are in difficult and challenging places, God is right there, coming to our aid and listening to our prayers and pleas. God is there, tending to our distress and helping us find a way out.
Say a prayer of thanks for all of the firefighters, first responders and their families this week. Know that God hears your voice.

Join us for the final Newport Ministerium Soup Supper of this Lent on this Wednesday, March 29, 5:30pm, at Incarnation United Church of Christ, 47 N 4th St., Newport.
We begin with a light supper of soup, bread and dessert. Pastor Debbie Ryder will offer the meditation on “I am the true vine” from John 15:1.

It’s All About Love: A Festival for the Jesus Movement, July 9-12, Baltimore Convention Center, Maryland
“It’s All About Love” features three Jesus Movement festival “tents” – Evangelism, Creation Care, and Racial Reconciliation. Each tent will offer an evening revival worship service and major plenary speaker, plus dozens of day-time workshops, panels, practice opportunities and other ways to engage.
