The Rev. Rebecca Myers March 24, 2020
This Sunday (March 29, 2020) at the Church of the Nativity and St. Stephen

Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (BCP, p. 219)

What jumps out at you when you read this prayer for the upcoming Fifth Sunday in Lent? This week, I focused on the words, "unruly wills and affections of sinners." As I watch the news around the world, I see how difficult it is when health care officials emphasize that we must physically distance ourselves from each other.

It is hard to totally change the way we live our lives when we cannot see this virus or its effects in our own situations. It is hard for us to do something now for benefits we will see much later. Sometimes we are defiant and want to do what we want to do. At other times, we just forget that we are called to live our lives differently at this time.

Because this virus has been in other parts of the world, we have the advantage of seeing what works and what doesn't work. We have the advantage to do things differently and in ways that show great love for each other and for our communities.

May we now more than ever live into Jesus' command to love God, love our neighbor, and love ourselves.

Love,

Rebecca+
