Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Exodus 34:29
This Sunday is the Last Sunday in Epiphany. The Gospel is about the transfiguration and the other readings are about speak about how we are changed by our encounters with God.
In the Exodus reading, Moses' physical appearance is greatly changed. His face shone so brightly that it frightened the Israelites. Every time Moses spoke to God, his face changed and shined so bright. Moses ended up putting a veil over his face so the Israelites would not be as frightened by his transformed appearance.
This week I wondered if we, too, look different when we are grounded in our relationship with God. I do know that the times I've met people who are very grounded in God, like Archbishop Desmond Tutu, their faces do shine.
May people see in your very countenance the light of God.
