Our Psalm this week talks about happiness. It especially speaks to how happy we can be when we confess our transgressions or wrongdoings or sins to God.
Remember hearing that we would get into less trouble when we told the truth, rather than telling a lie? Yet, how many of us still tried to lie or even justify our actions when we knew deep down we had done something wrong?
Often we find it hard to tell the truth or to accept responsibility for our actions. We don't like how we have hurt ourselves and hurt others. Nearly every week in our service, we do confess our sins -- those we easily acknowledge, those we have done intentionally, and those we are not even aware of, especially those done on our behalf.
There is also a rite of Reconciliation of a Penitent in two forms in The Book of Common Prayer, p. 446, for those who desire a private confession.
What is the joy of confessing our wrongdoing? What is the joy of examining ourselves and being honest about our behavior? The joy is that in honestly admitting what we have done by action or inaction, God forgives us. We have the joy of forgiveness. We have the joy of letting it go, learning and starting anew. Our guilt goes away.
