Nearly every Thursday morning, I participate in Morning Prayer with some colleagues I met in Kentucky. The others are now serving parishes in different Dioceses in North Carolina. Currently, we use Skype to say this daily office together.
One of the canticle choices for Morning Prayer is Canticle 12, A Song of Creation (BCP p. 88-90). It is from the Apocrphal text, Azariah and The Three Jews. You may know the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego also known as Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. They were put in a fiery furnace by King Nebudchadnezzar, yet did not die. Canticle 12 is from verses 35-65 and is the song sung by the men in the furnace.
Canticle 12 is divided into sections: Invocation, The Cosmic Order, The Earth and its Creatures, The People of God, and Doxology. The instructions say that you can use one or more sections and regardless, the Canticle always begins with the Invocation and concludes with the Doxology.
The Psalm, the apocryphal verses and Canticle 12 are related. They remind us that God made all of creation and all of creation acknowledges, glorifies and praises God. They remind us that even in the worst of times...the times we feel like we've been thrown into the fiery furnace, praising God is what we can do.
