This Sunday is our annual celebration of Pentecost. In our tradition, it has been ten days since Jesus ascended into heaven. We can only imagine what was going through the minds of the disciples. Were they planning a new community? Maybe they were in fervent prayer, waiting for an answer about what to do next.
So here comes this annual festival, bringing people to Jerusalem from near and far. What perfect timing for the holy spirit to be known in a dramatic way and through so many people. Thousands were baptized. People from many places and with many languages felt the spirit in their bones.
In seminary, we read a number of pieces about the day of Pentecost. Some argued that it was a fanciful telling of a story...a myth, maybe. Professor John Koenig finally said, we may not be sure exactly what happened that day, but something powerful happened, because the church grew tremendously and spread, especially given the geography and communicaton abilities of the time.

Volunteers and Donations needed for St. Barnabas Program. *Note date change.
Nativity will once again be providing breakfast and lunch for 100 children and staff at the St. Barnabas program, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Harrisburg, on Tuesday, July 3. We will also provide snacks for the entire week. Donations of food and snacks are needed, either items or money to purchase the food. Please see Wendy Day if you can help out.
