This Sunday

Memorial Day Service at St. Stephen

The Rev. Rebecca Myers May 26, 2016

God the King of Glory, in whose hands are the living and the
dead: We give you thanks for all those who have laid
down their lives in the service of our country. Grant them your
mercy and the light of your presence; and give us a sense of your
will and purpose, that we may understand that the work you
have begun in them will be perfected through Jesus Christ, the
Prince of Peace, in whom all strife is resolved. Amen.

Enriching Our Worship 3, p. 75

Memorial Day is not an official religious observance in The Episcopal Church; yet, our hymnal includes a section of "National Songs" and we always pray for our country.

This Sunday, we'll have the above prayer said, sing "America" and "God of Our Fathers." At the end of our service, we'll process out of St. Stephen's into the cemetery and remember the men buried in that cemetery who served in The War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War I.

Ultimately, war is a failure of the love of Jesus Christ. Some believe no war is ever justified. Others believe we don't go into war soon enough.

This Sunday, we'll honor those who served, as we pray that all of us might one day live in God's peace and in the love of Jesus Christ.

Many blessings as you finish your week!

Love, Rebecca+
