A Collect for Heroic Service
O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
This Saturday at 10am at St. Stephen's, we will have a morning prayer service and cemetery walk. This is for Memorial Day weekend. On this weekend, we usually think about all who have died who served in the military or fought in wars. However, I appreciate our prayer for heroic service, because it is inclusive of the many ways and many people who have changed the way we live...have made our communities better and moved us toward the beloved community that God envisions.
For instance, Tuesday was one year since the killing of George Floyd. His death sparked protests and movements for change all over the world. We are still wrestling with the question of what kind of system we need that allows everyone to feel safe in their communities. It is messy. It is not easy. It requires deep listening. What feels safe for me, may feel the opposite to someone else. Sometimes it is hard to even imagine what might work better, because we, just like the people in Jesus' time, are so steeped in the way things have been, we cannot see something new.
Just like the people we think about and pray for on Memorial Day, we, too, have a day of decision and we, too, must venture much for the liberties the future generations will enjoy. As we pray on Saturday, we cannot "rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines."
Love, Rebecca+
