Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.Collect for Proper 29, Book of Common Prayer, p. 236
This is the Last Sunday after Pentecost. It is the last Sunday of our church year and also known as Christ the King Sunday. In our Collect we acknowledge and pray for the unity and restoration of all people.
Especially during these times, we feel such stark divisions amongst us, neighbor to neighbor, even. For instance, I was glad I did not have to walk by a Confederate Flag on my way from my home to the church. It has been taken down. However, it is replaced by an all black American flag. From a distance, you cannot tell it is an American Flag. It is only as you get close, you can see the stars and stripes.
Curious, I looked up the flag. It means "no quarter given." In other words, it is that any perceived enemies will be dealt with in a violent manner. This from a family who claims to be friendly according to a letter they sent to me in reply to my letter about their Confederate flag.
Yes, we are certainly "divided and enslaved by sin," the sin that moves us away from God. We do need to be freed and brought together under the gracious rule of love.
Love,
Rebecca+
