Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Collect for Labor Day, pg. 261, Book of Common Prayer
This Sunday we pray this Collect for Labor Day. Sometimes in our work, whether it be paid or volunteer, we clearly see the effects on other people. We see and know that when we do a good job, people are helped. Sometimes we do not see how our work is linked to and affects others. This prayer reminds us to that we must know and understand how our work affects others.
In addition, the prayer reminds us to work for the common good. Work is not only about ourselves, it is what we bring to the whole group so all lives can be better. The prayer also reminds us to remember those who have been laid off, cannot find work and even those who are working diligently, but cannot make ends meet.
Let us also, be reminded of all those whose lives have helped us. Who made the cars we drive or the homes we live in or the clothes we wear, for instance? Let us pray also, for all of those whose labor has contributed to our own lives.
Blessings as you finish your week!
Love, Rebecca+
