When I read our Collect for this Sunday, I immediately thought about how easy it is for we as people to "confide in their own strength." How often do we say, "I can do this myself?" It is so hard to ask for help, isn't it? Many of us are so used to being those who give help; receiving help is quite a challenge.
I know that's been true for me. Sometimes when I've been in a job, I've felt so stressed and then discovered, it was because I believed I had to do the work all by myself. I had to tell myself that I did not need to do the task all by myself and then would make a list of all of the people I could call to ask for assistance. Sometimes the assistance was just knowing how they handled a similar situation.
Now, yes, we should definitely take those steps we can to help ourselves and we must remember that we cannot do it alone. All we do, we at least do with God's help at a bare minimum. If we can acknowledge that, then we can possibly be open to asking for help and assistance when we need it.
Thank God for our parish, which is certainly one place we can ask for help and receive it.

9/11 Memorial Observance, Sunday, Sept 12, noon - 4pm
Citizen's Fire Company, Newport is sponsoring a 9/11 memorial observance. From noon - 2pm, emergency equipment will be on display on S. Third and Mulberry Streets. At 2pm, the memorial service will begin at the fire company, 301 Mulberry, Street. Rev. Gary Bellis will provide remarks. Rebecca will provide the invocation and Rev. Michael Cromer will provide the benediction. Ed Mann, PA Fire Commissioner during 9/11, will be the main speaker. Music will be provided by PC Brass and the Perry County Color Guard will present the colors, as well as the 13-fold program for folding the American flag.
