Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Collect for Labor Day, p. 261, Book of Common Prayer
In this prayer for Labor Day, we are reminded how all of the work we do, whether paid or unpaid, affects others. We are also reminded to work for the common good. We are encouraged to not only think about ourselves, but to also think about how we work for other and for the good of all of us.
During this pandemic, we have often been reminded about people we have called "essential workers." Those who could not stay home during this pandemic, because their service was required to help us through. We have thought about everyone who works in health care facilities, bus drivers, the first responders; those people who work in our grocery stores and those who deliver supplies to them; those who grow and provide our food; those in warehouses and deliverers of the things we have bought online. In some cases, like meat packing plants, for instance, Covid hit the workforce hard and workers died. More recently, we are reminded of everyone working in education settings.
During this Labor Day, let us remember these workers and pray that we work and support efforts for safe working conditions and living wages. Let us give thanks for their work for the common good.

Today we take an additional offering for Caring for Nativity’s Neighbors Heating and Health.
Donations are sent to Join Hands, so people in our community have support for their needs.
Parlor People will resume on September 13, after the service in person in the yard and via Zoom.
Through November 1, we will discuss the topics in the Democracy Values & the 2020 Election: A Reflection Guide for Faith Communities. You should have received a copy of the guide with your recent service booklet mailing. Discussions will be led by Kay Cramer and Rebecca.

Farmer’s Market Coming to Newport, September 27, October 25 & November 22
Plans continue for a monthly farmer’s market adjacent to our parking lot. There will be up to ten vendors. Look for more information on dates. The market is sponsored by Friends of Newport.

Helping with the Church Garden
If you would like to help harvest the church garden bounty, come on Monday 9 – 11am. You are also invited to spend part of your Thursday at the garden. Pick produce and bring your lunch. Enjoy meeting others in a safe, distanced way. And there is ALWAYS weeding to do.
