This Sunday (September 9, 2018) at The Church of the Nativity and St. Stephen

This Sunday

Godly Play and Parlor People begin

secretary September 06, 2018
This Sunday (September 9, 2018) at The Church of the Nativity and St. Stephen

The rich and the poor have this in common:
the Lord is the maker of them all. Proverbs 22:2

Did you watch the service for Senator John McCain from Washington National Cathedral? If you did, it would have been very familiar. The service followed the Burial Rite from The Book of Common Prayer.

One of my friends on Facebook remarked how wonderful it was, because we say this same service for anyone who is buried. It doesn't matter whether you are rich or poor or well-known or little-known. In our service, we truly acknowledge that God is the maker of all of us. In our funeral rite, we acknowledge that we as a community are returning this human being to God.

The instructions for the Burial Rite include the following:

Baptized Christians are properly buried from the church. The service should be held at a time when the congregation has opportunity to be present. (BCP, p. 468)

In all of our rites (baptism, confirmation, marriage, burial), we acknowledge the importance of the community. As a community, we welcome new members through baptism and as a community, we acknowledge the death of our fellow member.

No matter who we are, we do have this in common...we are created by God and as such, we share in all of the rites of the church as a community.

Blessings as you finish your week!

Love, Rebecca
